김현석 교수

백지현 교수

백지현은 연세대학교 언론홍보영상학부 조교수로, 대인, 그룹, 조직 커뮤니케이션을 연구·강의하고 있다. 학부에서 경영학과 산업공학을 이중전공하고, Michigan State University에서 석사, University of Wisconsin-Madison에서 Communication Science 박사학위를 받았다. 전공 분야는 조언, 기만 커뮤니케이션, 집단 의사결정이며, 언어사용과 정체성이 정보 공유 및 수용에 미치는 영향을 탐구한다. 최근에는 양적·질적 방법을 혼합한 연구를 시도하며, 연세 초학제 융복합 연구 사업단의 ‘다름과 차이를 극복하는 소통과 테크놀로지’ 팀에서 연구하고 있다. 전미 커뮤니케이션 학회(NCA) 그룹 커뮤니케이션 분과에서 Top Paper상을 두 차례(2021, 2023) 수상했다.

제목: Global Entanglements: Bong Joon Ho's Cinematic Geographies

내용:

This talk is a retrospective examination of the entire body of work of the renowned South Korean film director, Bong Joon Ho, looking specifically at the way in which his films thematize social entanglements at various scales. The scalar focus in these treatments ranges from the micro to macro, from the local idiosyncrasies of a Korean apartment complex in which neighbors get on each other’s nerves to global systems of commerce and exchange in which multinational corporations compete in increasingly cut-throat markets. We may think of Bong Joon Ho’s body of work as offering a capacious geography that spatializes in film the complex web of social entanglements that shape life in the 21st century, and all this from the perspective of late capitalist South Korea, which turns out to offer special insight into our contemporary historical moment.

강연자 소개:

Joseph Jonghyun Jeon is Director of the Center for Critical Korean Studies and Professor of English at the University of California, Irvine, with appointments in Asian American Studies, Film and Media Studies, and Culture and Theory. He is the author of Racial Things, Racial Forms: Objecthood in Avant-Garde Asian American Poetry(Iowa, 2012); Vicious Circuits: Korea’s IMF Cinema and the End of the American Century (Stanford, 2019); and Bong Joon Ho: Global Entanglements (Illinois, 2024). His work has been published in Critical Inquiry, Representations, Cinema Journal, Journal of Asian American Studies, and positions. He was born in Seoul, South Korea and immigrated with his family to the United States as a young child.

제목: An exploratory study of time series analysis in communication research

내용:

A time series is a sequence of data collected or recorded chronologically, usually at uniform intervals. We encounter this type of data in various fields, including economics/finance (e.g., daily closing stock prices, monthly price indices, quarterly unemployment rates), meteorology (e.g., hourly temperature/precipitation/wind speed), and engineering (e.g., sound waves, electric signals). By examining those sequential measurements over time, researchers can identify trends, patterns, and relationships that might not be apparent from a single snapshot or sample. In addition, time series analysis can be a powerful tool in communication research, for example, to illustrate how legacy/social media’s attention to specific issues fluctuates over time and to demonstrate how changes in media content influence public opinion or political/commercial campaigns over time. Particularly, in case the time series is characterized by a linear relationship between current and past values (so-called autocorrelation), ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average) models can be suitable for understanding and predicting the time-dependent media phenomenon and effects. In this talk, I will review fundamental concepts in time series analysis and discuss ARIMA applications in communication research based on two real examples selected from recent communication publications.

강연자 소개: Bu Hyoung Lee is a statistician and an associate professor of statistics at Loyola University Maryland in the United States. He earned an M.A. degree in communication from Seoul National University in 2006 and a Ph.D. degree in statistics from Temple University in 2016. His research interests include spatial/temporal data analysis and machine learning with complicated/incomplete data.

초록: 지속가능한양질의 저널리즘을 구현하기 위해서는 규범주의나 탈상업화와 같은 논의는 저널리즘을 이루는 가치들 중 일부만을 다루어 한계가 있다고 보고, 언론의 품질과 주목, 경제적 성과가 서로 대립하지 않고 선순환하는 조건을 언론사의 사업 전략을 중심으로 탐색하였다. 신문사들의 패널 자료와 시계열 자료를 활용하여 신문사의 투자가 기사의 품질을 높이는지, 품질이 주목을 통해 경제적 성과로 이어지는지, 그리고 경제적 성과는 다시 투자나 품질로 되먹임되는 선순환이 이루어지는지 확인하였고, 이 연결이 신문사의 사업 전략에 따라서는 어떻게 달라지는지 살펴보았다. 사업 전략은 다음의 세 가지를 분석했다. 먼저 음성적인 사업 전략이어서 그동안 경험적 연구가 부족했던 협찬 등을 통한 정보원 시장 전략을 살펴보았고, 기업의 목표와 저널리즘 가치에 대한 태도에 따른 사업 전략을 유형화하여 검토했으며, 신문의 수익성 위기를 극복하는 방안으로 논의되는 사업 다각화 전략을 분석하였다.

연사 소개: 서울대학교언론정보학과에서 이 연구로 박사학위를 받았다. 서울대 같은 과에서 석사를, 경제학부에서 학사를 마쳤다. 미디어 산업을 연구하고 있으며, 문체부 산하 공공기관을 거쳐 플랫폼 기업에서 일하고 있다.

연사 소개: 1984년 독일로 건너가 괴팅겐대학교에서 정치사상사로 박사 학위를 받았고, 할레대학교에서 교수 자격(Habilitation)을 취득했다. 2008년 베를린자유대학교 한국학과의 첫 번째 정교수가 되면서 당시 중국학과 일본학의 비교 대상으로만 머무르던 한국학을 독자적이고 대중적인 연구 분야로 끌어올렸다. 남과 북의 정치·사회·역사·문화·예술 전 분야를 사회과학적 방법론으로 연구하는 한국학연구소 소장이자 동아시아대학원 원장으로 지내고 있다. 아시아 여성 최초로 역사문화학부 학장을 지냈다. 2016년에 300년 역사를 가진 베를린-브란덴부르크 학술원 (구 프러시아왕립학술원) 최초의 비서구, 동아시아 출신 정회원이 되었다. 평화적인 방법으로 분단을 극복하고 통일된 하나의 국가를 만든 독일의 경험을 담은 ‘독일통일총서’를 집대성한 공을 인정받아 국민훈장 모란장을 받았고, 이미륵상 등을 수상했다. 독일어와 영어로 쓴 저서 12권과 140편의 논문을 발표했다. 한국어로 『베를린, 베를린』, 『코로나 팬데믹과 한국의 길』(공저), 『통합 그 이후를 생각하다』(공저) 등을 썼다.

제목: Chinese Student-Fans in South Korea and the Search for Livability through Conational Enclaves
내용:South Korean universities have become a popular study-abroad destination for female Chinese students who choose the country with the goal of intensifying their fan activities. Even after arriving in Korea, these fans remain within the Chinese fandom community in Korea (which is separate from the Korean fandom) and continue to engage with their original fan communities in China through virtual networks. This presentation examines the conational fan community as an enclave through which Chinese student-fans navigate the host country while maintaining distance from it. The Chinese K-pop fandom provides these students with a sense of safety and comfort, especially in contrast to the inhospitable environment of Korean campuses and broader society amidst rising Sinophobia in South Korea. Moreover, this space offers a variety of imagined, mediated, and physical forms of attachment, serving as a crucible for these Chinese youths’ personal growth outside the university and shaping their visions for the future.
강연자 소개: Jiyeon Kang is an Associate Professor of Communication Studies and Korean Studies at the University of Iowa. Her research focuses on digital media, publics and counterpublics, global higher education, and student mobility within and across East Asia. She is especially interested in how marginalized groups reshape dominant discourses and create livable conditions in an inhospitable environment. She is currently studying emergent norms of intercultural and international coexistence in the undergraduate student interchange among South Korea, China, and the United States.

While much of the current debates narrowly center around technical challenges, such as AI-enabled disinformation, Kim calls for scholarly attention to broader implications of the data-driven information environment for fundamental features of democracy, including inequality. Based on a few empirical studies that directly observed the exposure to targeted advertising, covert coordination, and its real-world impact including actual voter turnout, Kim’s talk empirically investigates and theoretically explains how and why the data-driven information environment propels inequality in political involvement. Broader applications in critical living conditions---health and lifestyle, housing, and civic engagement will be discussed as well. 강연자 소개: Young Mie Kim is a 2023-4 Leonore Annenberg and Wallis Annenberg Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, Andrew Carnegie Fellow, and Professor of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Department of Political Science (Faculty Affiliate) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Kim’s research concerns data-driven, algorithm-based, digitally mediated political communication. Her recent research project, Project DATA (Digital Ad Tracking & Analysis), empirically investigates the sponsors, content, and targets of digital political campaigns across multiple platforms with a user-based, real-time ad tracking tool that reverse engineers the algorithms of political campaigns. Kim’s works have been published in the Journal of Politics, Nature, Political Communication, and Science, among others. Kim’s research, “The Stealth Media? Groups and Targets behind Divisive Issue Campaigns on Facebook,” identified “suspicious groups,” including Russian groups on Facebook. The work received the Kaid-Sanders Best Article of the Year in Political Communication (2018) award by the International Communication Association. Kim was among the first to discover Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, including Russian operation’s targeted voter suppression campaigns. Kim testified at the Federal Election Commission‘s hearings on the rulemaking of internet communication disclaimers and presented Congressional briefings on election interference on social media. Her research on Russian election interference in the US presidential election was cited by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Kim spoke at the European Parliament about her research on data-driven political advertising and inequality in political involvement.

제목: Health Communication in Cancer Prevention & Survivorship: An Interdisciplinary Approach
내용:Both cancer patients and their families face great challenges while dealing with diagnoses, treatments, and long-term emotional consequences of cancer after treatments end. There are continuing needs for identifying supportive care options to resolve stress-related symptoms such as emotional distress for cancer patients and caregivers. Patients undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) suffer substantial psychological impairment given the rigors and multiple sequelae of treatment. While studies have examined methods to reduce psychological distress among patients following HCT, strict infection-control protocols and the distance between transplant centers and where HCT patients live can limit patients’ ability to participate in face-to-face care. To overcome these barriers, our research team previously developed a novel remotely-delivered digital storytelling (DST) intervention that has shown preliminary efficacy of the DST compared to an information control condition, finding that anxiety and depression were reduced for those participating in the DST. While stories can create important emotions, patients need additional support to process those emotions. Observing that heart rate variability, a measure of autonomic nervous system balance (ANS), was associated with the better outcomes in response to DST, we developed an integrated DST intervention with enhancements to further support emotional processing, including heart rate variability biofeedback training, and elements that encourage social rehearsal as one anticipates the challenges of post-HCT. Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) is an evidence-based, non-invasive, mHealth intervention that is designed to help people learn to self-regulate emotions using visual and/or auditory feedback to slow breath rate and focus on positive emotional contexts to improve autonomic nervous system balance. I'll present this integrated approach by combining a traditional digital storytelling intervention with heart rate variability biofeedback to produce greater reductions in psychological distress.
강연자 소개: Dr. Sunny Kim is a health communication scholar by degree, with extraordinary training in health communication, behavioral medicine and psychosocial oncology, and intervention research with strong quantitative and qualitative methods design and analysis skills. She is an Associate Professor with tenure in the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona State University (ASU), and an affiliate investigator at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Her work draws from interdisciplinary and collaborative settings and spans a variety of fields such as health communication, nursing, oncology, and hematology, with an emphasis on developing and testing the efficacy of narrative-based storytelling as a psychosocial coping intervention to alleviate distress and improve emotion regulation in both cancer patients and their family caregivers. Another line of research focuses on developing and testing a digital storytelling intervention as an effective health promotion/behavior strategy (e.g., COVID-19 and HPV vaccinations). She is also investigating Heart Rate Variability (HRV) rhythms that represent positive vs. negative emotional state as an objective and neurophysiological assessment. Currently, she is serving as Principal Investigator for 6 externally and internally funded grants, including two National Institute of Health grants.

제목: The Photographic Imagination: Reflections on Chris Marker's La Jetée(1962)
내용: This paper considers Chris Marker’s classic 1962 film / photo-romanLa Jetée in terms of a constellation of concepts and motifs drawn from the writings on photography of Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes and Siegfried Kracauer. My focus is on a number of key aspects of Marker's extraordinary work: the interlacing of memory, history and photography; the inventorying of a disenchanted Nature, as nature morte; the idea of haunting (by ghosts from both past and future); the 'thrown-ness' of figures, images and gazes (the gesture of 'voila'!) and, the moment of awakening. In tracing such themes, I suggest that Marker's film appears as a meta-work: a photo-roman which itself encompasses and expresses the very noeme, the essence, of photography itself.

발표자 소개: Nicholas Valentino is a professor at the University of Michigan and a political psychology expert who studies U.S. elections. He currently serves as a Principal Investigator of the American National Election Studies (ANES). He specializes in political psychological approaches to understanding public opinion formation, socialization, information seeking, and electoral participation. His work employs experimental methods, surveys, and content analyses of political communication. The research has focused on the intersecting roles of racial attitudes and public emotions, especially the distinct power of anger versus fear. He has also written extensively on the causes and consequences of empathy for ethnic outgroups.
