BTS는 왜 그래미를 보이콧했나: 『한일 대중음악사』로 읽는 카테고리의 정치학

Popular culture does not simply cross borders; in transit, it is renamed, classified, and repositioned. My research examines how South Korea and Japan have perceived and categorized each other’s popular culture under conditions of postcoloniality, the Cold War, cultural prohibition and liberalization, and globalization. A Transnational History of Japanese and Korean Popular Music extends this inquiry across the post-1965 history of popular music. Rather than asking who “influenced” whom, this talk foregrounds categorization: how media, markets, industries, institutions, and discourse place circulating music within particular boundaries and hierarchies. It traces a history from hōgaku/yōgaku and “Korean enka” to J-Pop/K-Pop and today’s Pop/Asian Pop divide. BTS’s 2026 decision not to submit music for the 2027 Grammys, following the introduction of Best Asian Pop Music Performance, brings this history into a global frame. Who has the power to classify music, and which music can appear simply as “Pop” within global cultural circulation?

대중문화는 국경을 넘을 때 단순히 이동하지 않는다. 새로운 이름을 얻고 장르, 지역, 언어의 경계 속에 다시 배치된다. 나는 그동안 식민지 이후, 냉전, 금지와 개방, 글로벌화의 조건 속에서 한국과 일본의 대중문화가 서로를 어떻게 인식하고 분류하며, 그 과정에서 문화적 정체성과 위계를 재구성해 왔는지를 연구해 왔다. 『한일 대중음악사』는 이러한 문제의식을1965년 이후의 음악사로 확장한 작업이다. 이 발표는 어느 문화가 다른 문화에 얼마나 ‘영향’을 주었는가보다, 이동하는 음악이 미디어와 시장, 산업, 제도와 담론을 통해 어떤 범주에 배치되는지에 주목한다. 특히 ‘카테고리’를 분석의 중심에 놓고, 음악을 분류하는 행위가 어떻게 자기와 타자, 중심과 주변, 보편과 지역의 경계를 생산하는지를 살펴본다. 전후 일본의 ‘邦楽/洋楽’ 구분과 ‘한국 엔카’라는 위치짓기에서 출발해, 1990년대 이후 J-Pop과 K-Pop, 오늘날 Pop/Asian Pop으로 이어지는 분류의 변화를 추적한다. 이를 통해 K-Pop의 세계적 성공을 단순한 중심 진입의 서사가 아니라 기존 범주의 재편과 새로운 범주의 형성 과정으로 읽는다. 특히 2026년 BTS가 그래미의 ‘Best Asian Pop Music Performance’ 부문 신설 직후 2027년 그래미에 음악을 출품하지 않기로 한 결정은 이 오래된 카테고리의 정치학을 글로벌 차원에서 다시 드러낸다. 누가 음악을 분류할 권력을 가지며, 어떤 음악은 지역과 언어의 수식어 없이 단지 ‘Pop’으로 인정될 수 있는가?

Sungmin Kim received his M.A. in Communication from Seoul National University and his Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Information Studies from the University of Tokyo. He is Professor at the Research Faculty of Media and Communication, Hokkaido University. His research interests include media and cultural studies, the sociology of music, and the history of Japan–Korea relations. His books include Postwar South Korea and Japanese Culture and K-Pop: Media of New Sense. His recent book Nikkan Popyurā Ongakushi (『日韓ポピュラー音楽史』), published in Korean as 『한일 대중음악사』, received the Grand Prize at the 3rd Music Book Awards (音楽本大賞) in Japan in 2025. An English edition is forthcoming from Brill.

• 주제: 에이전틱 AI 시대의 컴퓨테이셔널 방법론과 저널리즘 연구

• 초록:   디지털 전환과 AI 기술의 급속한 발전은 사회과학 연구방법론의 근본적 재편을 요구하고 있으나, 현재의 방법론적 지형은 추론통계 중심의 양적 방법론과 소규모 해석학적 질적 방법론의 이분법에 머물러 있다. 본 연구는 컴퓨테이셔널 연구방법론이 이 두 전통의 보조 수단이 아닌, 독자적 인식론적 기반을 갖춘 제3의 방법론 영역으로 발전할 수 있음을 논의한다. 이를 위해 퍼스의 귀추법, 쿤의 패러다임 전환, 복잡계의 창발, 바스카의 비판적 실재론이라는 철학적 기반을 통해 컴퓨테이셔널 방법론의 인식론적 독자성을 확립하고, 에이전틱 AI 시대의 연구방법론을 임베딩-클러스터링, 에이전트 데이터 분석, 챗봇 실험, 멀티 에이전트 토론, 생성적 에이전트 시뮬레이션, 대표 대리 설문, 숙의형 대리 설문의 7가지로 유형화한다. 아울러 LLM이 근거 이론, 담론 분석, 참여 관찰 등 질적 연구를 변환하는 양상을 검토하고, 미디어-커뮤니케이션 연구에서의 적용 가능성을 제시한다. 특히 저널리즘 연구 분야는 뉴스 기사, 댓글, 유튜브 등 다양한 플랫폼에서 대규모 텍스트·영상 데이터의 수집과 분석이 가능해 컴퓨테이셔널 방법론의 적용 잠재력이 매우 크지만, 현재까지 토픽 모델링과 연결망 분석 등 고전적 방법론의 적용에 머물러 있는 실정이다. 본 발표에서는 이러한 방법론적 정체를 넘어, 에이전틱 AI 기반의 혁신적 방법론이 저널리즘 연구에 어떻게 적용될 수 있는지 구체적 사례를 통해 그 가능성을 제시한다. 나아가 '데이터 마이닝에서 데이터 생태학으로'의 패러다임 전환을 제안하며, 컴퓨테이셔널 방법론의 독립적 위상 확보를 위한 연구 윤리 혁신, 학술 심사 체계 개선, 교육과정 재편 등 제도적·학문적 조건도 논의한다. 
• 연사 소개:  이종혁 교수는 경희대학교 미디어학과에 재직 중으로, 저널리즘, 정치커뮤니케이션, 컴퓨테이셔널연구방법론 중심으로 연구하고 있다. 일간지 기자 출신으로 현장 저널리즘 경험을 바탕으로 데이터저널리즘, 인공지능미디어코딩, 컴퓨테이셔널연구방법론, 경제저널리즘, 매체철학 등을 강의하고 있다. 한국언론학회 컴퓨테이셔널방법론연구회와 한국방송학회 방송저널리즘연구회 회장을 역임했으며, 미국 센트럴미시간대학교에서 조교수로 근무했다. 시라큐스대학교에서 박사 학위를 취득했다.

• 주제: When You Can't Trust Your Own Eyes: Challenges, Evidence, and Future Directions in the Deepfake Era

• 초록:   What happens when you can no longer trust your own eyes? With the rapid advancement and proliferation of generative AI, distinguishing between authentic human-made messages and AI-generated fakes has become increasingly difficult. Due to their manipulative and deceptive nature, deepfakes often lack transparent disclosure, forcing recipients to face significant cognitive challenges in resolving suspicions about source authenticity. In this talk, I will explain how deepfakes bypass and challenge our traditional frameworks for information processing. I will also introduce my recent study exploring how this novel cognitive experience affects not only our sense of self but also our subsequent responses to future information. The session will conclude with a discussion on future research directions, serving as a springboard for us to collectively ponder what it means to see and believe in the era of deepfakes. 
• 연사 소개:  Sukyoung Choi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Yonsei University. Her research examines the psychological and interpersonal processes surrounding emerging communication technologies and their broader societal implications. At the center of her current projects are topics such as AI-mediated communication and authenticity, AI and polarization, and AI and public opinion formation. Her work has been published in leading academic journals, such as Communication Research, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Media Psychology, New Media & Society, and Science Communication. Notably, her doctoral dissertation on deepfakes and metacognitive experiences in manipulative AI-mediated communication was honored with the Herbert S. Dordick Dissertation Award from the International Communication Association (ICA). Additionally, she received the Top Student Paper Award from the National Communication Association (NCA) for her gaming research. A former Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies (KFAS) Study Abroad Fellow, she earned her Ph.D. from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California, following an M.A. and B.A. in Communication from Seoul National University.
