○ 초록: Construal level theory is a theory about how we perceive psychologically distant events and entities. Entities and events are considered psychologically distant when they exist or happen in the distant future (temporal distance), in a remote location (spatial distance), to people dissimilar to ourselves (social distance), and with a low probability (hypothetical distance). In this talk, I will present the focal tenets of construal level theory and discuss its implications for communication research. We will specifically focus how the theory can guide research persuasive message effects. I will also discuss an application of the theory to the issue of how communication message features can help or hinder adherence to statistical true information versus anecdotal misinformation. I will conclude with caveats related to applying the theory and future directions for research message effects.

○ 연사 소개: Stella Juhyun Lee (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania, Communication) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at Konkuk University. Her research focuses persuasion and misinformation in the context of health issues such as tobacco regulatory science and COVID-19. Her work has appeared in top tier communication journals such as—Journal of Communication, Communication Theory, Health Communication—and top tier public health journals such as JAMA Pediatrics and Nicotine and Tobacco Research.
