○ 초록: Conflict between groups of different ethnic, religious, or ideological backgrounds continues to bee of the most difficult challenges of our time. Intergroup contact theory suggests that encounters with people who are the other side of these divides could improve outgroup attitudes (Allport, 1954; Pettigrew, 1998). However, notly are the groups often segregated residentially, educationally, and occupationally, but citizens also actively avoid intergroup interactions in their everyday lives. In this talk, I will present a series of studies that examined various communicative contexts that offer opportunities for encountering difference beyond the boundaries set by physical reach, personal preferences, and imagination. In doing so, I try to bring together disparate theoretical frameworks of deliberation, narrative persuasion, and intergroup contact to shed light the phenomenon of “encountering difference". In closing, I will share my thoughts new venues and ideas for contact research in communication.
