●제목: Rethinking Global Culture in the Time of (De) Globalization

●내용:
With the identification of intensified financial integration and media connectivity on a global scale, there have been rich debates on global culture in the past three decades, tackling the standpoint that sustains the boundedness of culture to nation-states. Since the pandemic, alternative approaches have emerged to rethink the gravity of geographic conditions and governmental forces in shaping the form and range of cultural practices and interactions. Against this backdrop, drawing on ongoing research projects on the Korean media industry’s reactionary moves in a turbulent world situation, this presentation devotes special attention to environment and agency as the two critical axes that affect media practitioners’ understanding of the world and their presentation of cultural experiences, ideas, and feelings. I will then address the contribution of the Korean case to advancing the conceptual discussion of global culture in the time of (de)globalization.

●강연자 소개:
Ju Oak Kim is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology and Communication at Texas A&M International University. She served as the director of undergraduate studies in communication. Her research focuses on how media and communication technologies have revolutionized the form and scope of cultural interactions and practices and how peripheral actors have become emerging forces in the production, distribution, and consumption of global cultures. She was a US-Korea NextGen Fellow (2020–2021), co-sponsored by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the University of Southern California Korean Studies Institute, and the Korea Foundation, and a faculty fellow (2017) selected by the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) Educational Foundation.
